Mercury Verado Repower Benefits

World-renowned angling authority and television host George Poveromo gives his opinion on Mercury Verado repower benefits.

Mercury Verado Repower Benefits

Torque, fuel efficiency, durability, full-range power and less weight are all major considerations when choosing an outboard to repower. Mercury's lineup of in-line six cylinder and V8 Verado outboards delivers all this and more.

For example, the triple 400 hp Verados powering my Mako 334 center console generate quick hole shots, swift yet economical cruising speeds, and higher upper range speeds. As for fuel economy, at around 4,000 rpms and 45 miles per hour, I'm averaging 1.1 miles-per-gallon, heavy (topped off live wells, fish box and 306-gallon fuel tank). This power is being transferred by three, 21-inch pitch, Mercury Enertia Eco propellers.

The durability of my 400hp Verados has been flawless throughout my local and regional fishing outings and two major Bahamas trips this season: a 150 mile one-way run from Palm Beach Inlet to the Green Turtle Club in the Abacos, and a 252 mile, one-way run from Miami's Government Cut to the Cape Eleuthera Resort & Marina.

Mercury's 350 and 400hp Verados are supercharged, in-line, six-cylinder, 2.6-liter outboards, weighing approximately 668 pounds. Mercury's all-new 250 and 300 hp Verados, by comparison, rely on a larger, yet lighter, 4.6 liter, V8 powerhead (in lieu of supercharging) to generate exceptional torque throughout their entire operating range. They weigh approximately 600 lbs.

I've run the new 250hp Verado; Its quietness and torque are unprecedented in this class of outboard power. So much so, that it has to be experienced personally to be believed. They're the ideal outboard for skiffs as well as for twin applications on mid-size to large boats.

I'm a stickler for servicing my outboards, often ahead of schedule. Yet, on occasion, I'll get a little lazy and not remove the cowlings to check oil levels. However, with the top cowl service door on the new 250 and 300 Verados, oil levels can be checked within seconds, and prior to every trip.

And, for peace of mind and full support, Mercury's dealer network is second to none. This includes the dealership which services my Verados, TNT Marine in North Miami, Florida.

With performance and backing like this, it's little wonder why Mercury Verados remain in high demand.
